Importance Of Mehndi or Henna In Indian Culture

Have you ever seen a person with a tattoo with a variety of complex patterns and they can cover a whole arm or leg with a special kind of color. You might have seen a Henna tattoo. So what is a Henna?

Indian henna designs are ceremonial traditions that women of the southern Asian and some Arabian cultures use to beautify and adorn themselves for special events. The popular tradition of putting designs on parts of the body are a favorite cultural event to women in countries like Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh. The tradition of painting designs and figures on parts of the body is said to have started in India thousands of years ago. Also known as Henna, Mehendi, and tattoo, this fashion trend is an integral part of these country’s cultural celebrations.
Henna is a plant that grows in the hot climates of Asia. Originally it was to use to make a paste that people of this area place on the soles of their feet, and in the palms of their hands. As the climate is very hot this application had a cooling effect that absorb through the hands and feet into the body. This cooling effect would last for as long as the paste was on. However, as the paste dries up, it left patterns in the skin which can last anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks. The patterns gave people the ideas for the designs and decorations to start this tradition.
